Working Remotely & Public Wi-Fi
Working from home, a café, or while travelling is normal — and safe, as long as you carry a few habits with you. Use the company's secure connection, be careful who can see or hear you, and treat public Wi-Fi and shared spaces as places where caution pays off.
Outside the office you lose the building's built-in protections, so a little of the responsibility shifts to you. The main risks are simple: others overhearing or overseeing your work, untrusted networks, and devices going missing in transit. None of them are hard to manage once you're in the habit.
Public Wi-Fi deserves a special mention. It's fine for casual browsing, but for work you should use the company's secure connection (VPN) so your traffic is protected on networks you don't control.
Connect and work securely
- DoUse the company's secure connection (VPN) and approved tools when working away from the office, especially on any network you don't control.
- DoKeep your home Wi-Fi protected with a strong password and an up-to-date router.
- AlwaysUse the company VPN/approved connection for work on public or untrusted Wi-Fi — never send work data over an open network unprotected.
- ConsiderTethering to your phone's mobile data instead of using unknown public Wi-Fi when you need to work on the move.
Mind your surroundings
- DoBe aware of who can see your screen or hear your calls in public, and use a privacy filter for sensitive work (see Clear Desk & Locked Screen).
- DoKeep devices with you or locked away when travelling — never leave a laptop visible in a car or unattended in public.
- Do notDiscuss confidential customer or company matters where strangers can overhear, or work on sensitive data on a screen others can see.
- NeverConnect to a work system over public Wi-Fi without the company's secure connection, or use a random "free Wi-Fi" that looks suspicious.
Ask yourself
- AskAm I on a trusted connection, or should I switch on the VPN / use mobile data?
- AskCan anyone nearby see my screen or hear my call?
- AskAre my devices secure and with me, not left somewhere they could be taken?
